I don’t think you should ever have to kick your chocolate habit. But. But—if you want to make your craving less of an ism and more of a good thing you feel you have control over, you can redefine what ‘chocolate’ means to your tastebuds…The magic that happens in your mouth when you take a hit.
Is it only the sugar? Is it even the sugar?
Is it the texture; the-velvet-then-molten feel as you eat? A crunch or chew of filling?
Is it the cocoa thrum?
Is it something more than the empirically sensory—the titillation of indulgence? Or, reframed, the simple pleasure in engaging in the simply pleasurable?
You can recreate the experience of chocolate—in fact, intensify it—in a healthier way, by amplifying the things that make the stuff unique to your tastebuds.
Enter the Cacao, Orange and Cashew Butter Smoothie.
It’s a basic formula. Throw in the all-important cocoa flavour (in this case, from cacao, plus the nibs, for texture), add a little spice and salt for dimension, a creamy nut butter to make it all more filling, and citrus, for zing. DONE. And then you can ditch all the guilt you’ve been toting for that candy wrapper landfill
under your duvet in your handbag.
Give this smoothie a whirl and let me know how much you don’t miss the store-bought meh, mkay?
FYI, you can totally buy cashew butter (which I do, often), but making your own is so ridic simple, too. My travel queen / blogger buddy Kirby has a failsafe two-ingredient cashew butter recipe you should feel LAME about for not yet trying. So just try it, already.
What is the Difference Between Cacao and Cocoa?
The two are essentially the same thing, except that cocoa is different in molecular structure because it’s been more processed , i.e. subjected to high temperatures. And so, when something is more processed, its nutritional profile is diminished. Cocoa still has antioxidant and magnesium benefit, just not as much as cacao.
Cacao tends to be more bitter and less sweet than cocoa products, so if you’re not a huge fan of the taste, just opt for as dark a chocolate as you can muster (so, higher in cocoa percentage) for more of the good-for-you effects.Print
